Re’eh: How to Stay on the Path of Blessing During Trials

"In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." (Romans 8:37)

As the children of Israel stand poised to cross over into the Jordan, God sets before the people two separate and distinct directions: a way of blessing if they choose to obey God’s commandments and a way of cursing if they choose to walk in disobedience to those laws. These two directions, the blessing and the curse, are to be proclaimed on two mountain tops in the Land: Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal.

A Jordanian boy leads his flock. Although the Israelites first settled on the east side of the Jordan, in the 20th century, that land was allocated to the creation of an entirely new country called Transjordan (Jordan) by the League of Nations.

As the tribes of Israel prepare to end their wilderness wanderings and enter the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuven, Gad, and half of Manasseh ask Moses for permission to settle east of the Jordan River instead of in their inheritance of Canaan. Moses, at first, misunderstands their motives and accuses them of causing division among the community and avoiding their responsibility to their fellow tribes.
