Tel Aviv’s Consumer Physics Inc. has created a device called SCiO that will give ordinary people insight into the physical world in which we live.

The new SCiO device enables people to better understand the physical world around them.

The device uses Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy to provide instant information about the chemical make-up of just about anything and sends it directly to the user’s smartphone.

The device works by shining a light onto the surface of the object, which reflects back onto the device sensor along with the object’s molecules, creating a unique molecular optical signature for that object.

The SCiO, Latin for to know or understand, provides the user with practical information about food, plants, and medicines.

For instance, this molecular sensor, which fits in the palm of the hand, can be pointed at food and provide nutritional facts, caloric content, and ripeness.

Pointing it at a plant will provide in-depth data such as its wellbeing, hydration, and soil analysis.

Pointing it at medicine will reveal the make-up of a pill before it is taken.

Although this method of analysis is not new, the capacity to bring this technology to such a small, affordable device is.

SCiO is the first molecular sensor that fits in the palm of your hand.

While the device can currently be used for the analysis of foods, plants, and medicines, plans are in place to increase its analytical capabilities.

It may eventually have some practical lifesaving applications, such as testing for the safety of food and water, analyzing evidence at a crime scene, and testing food for allergic content, such as peanuts.

The device currently detects materials in concentrations of 1% or higher, although “concentration levels of 0.1% or less may also be feasible for some materials.”  (Kickstarter)

As information is uploaded to the SCiO database, creating a massive storage of knowledge regarding all types of objects, its capabilities will grow over time.

The goal of its developers is to create a “world database of matter,” not a modest objective.

The SCiO communicates information by delivering the spectrum of the sample to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth, which in turn forwards it to a cloud-based service for real-time analysis.

The possibilities are endless as the entire internet community will be joining in to provide smartphone apps and other potential uses when it reaches the market in December.

The Bible states that God’s invisible qualities can be clearly seen through His creation.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  (Romans 1:20)
