Lag b’Omer: Yearning for the Messiah

As the sun sets on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Lag b’Omer begins. This one-day holiday is celebrated between the Passover and Shavuot (Weeks/Pentecost). Although, this holiday was instituted by the rabbis, it does fall within the Biblically mandated observance of counting the Omer, the period of time that links Passover (the exodus from Egypt) with Shavuot (the giving of the Torah).

Tonight, as the sun sets, Yom HaShoah (יום השואה), Holocaust Day, begins. Here in Israel and around the world, the Jewish People face the memory and pain of the Holocaust and say, “Never again.” And for many of us here at the ministry, it is very personal as we lost grandparents, aunts and uncles, who were gassed and then put in the ovens in Auschwitz. And the family members who were not put to death right away were in slave labor camps becoming living skeletons.

Tonight as the sun sets, Jews all over the world will begin celebrating Purim, a holiday in which the heroic efforts to save the Jewish People during the Persian Empire of Achashverosh (also known as Xerxes or Ahasuerus who possibly reigned 486–465 BC) is retold. This joyous holiday of Purim helps us to remember not only the courage of Esther but the responsibility of us all to watch, rally for, and step out in faith for the land and people that God Himself has chosen.
